Details of Experience:
Mrs. K. was admitted to The Enclave at Rye Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on July 09, 2025, following a complete below-the-knee amputation of her left leg. Upon arriving at our community, Mrs. K was welcomed by the concierge and introduced to the interdisciplinary care team, including the unit nurse and doctor.
Mrs. K was introduced to Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler, the founders of the Amputee Walking School and the support behind the CareRite Comprehensive Amputee Rehabilitation Program, while she was still in the hospital. She was later introduced to Lauren, her physical therapist, and together they developed a plan to begin her long-awaited rehabilitation journey.
She was also introduced to Jennifer, our Urban Zen Integrative Therapist (UZIT). This holistic program was developed to help patients manage serious illnesses. The Urban Zen Program combines gentle yoga movements, restorative poses, breath awareness, and meditation with essential oils and Reiki to alleviate symptoms like pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, and constipation (PANIC).
The first week’s intervention plans with Dr. Jacob and the nursing team involved pain-relieving modalities, while the focus of treatment for the physical therapy team involved strengthening, endurance, range of motion, and education. The physical therapy team focused on her physical rehabilitation, while Jennifer from Urban Zen focused on helping her reduce her stress and anxiety.
According to Lauren, her physical therapist, Mrs. K has been doing well, even though she had to have a revision done on her amputation. She is able to transfer from her bed to her chair with supervision. She is doing well in therapy and working towards getting fitted for her prosthesis. Todd said, “A lot of exciting things are going to happen for her in the upcoming weeks, and it’s all focused on a better quality of life”.
Mrs. K is very dedicated, and she works hard every day to build her strength and endurance. The team works hard every day to make sure she meets her goal, and we wish her all the best as she continues on her journey towards better health.
