Ms. Mutinelli-Colon was admitted to The Enclave at Rye Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on March 28th, 2023. A medical doctor at Montefiore Hospital referred her to The Enclave for physical therapy evaluation and treatment.
Upon arrival, the concierge warmly welcomed Ms. Mutinelli-colon and her daughter Monica. She was evaluated immediately by the interdisciplinary team, including nursing, rehabilitation, social services, concierge, and recreation departments. While at the hospital, Ms. Mutinelli-colon and her daughter were introduced to Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler, gold metal recipients at the Paralympics and the heart and soul of Care Rite’s Comprehensive Amputee Rehabilitation Program. Her daughter Monica had a bad experience with a different facility, so initially, she did not trust us. However, after a few weeks, we gained her trust, making it easier for the team to provide better care for her mom.
Initially, Ms. Mutinelli-colon came to The Enclave for rehab following a right below-knee amputation. However, she was constantly getting infections due to multiple ulcers on her left leg. Therefore, she was sent back to the hospital and had a left below-knee amputation procedure. Once Ms. Mutinelli-colon returned to The Enclave, she became unmotivated to continue therapy. She was completely dependent as she was someone who lived on her own and was so used to doing everything by herself…having to rely on others mentally drained her. The recreation team prioritized going to Ms. Mutinelli-colon’s room daily to encourage her to complete her sessions. Eventually, she became more motivated during her sessions. Once her wounds were healed, she began prosthetic training with Todd and Dennis.
Even though Ms. Mutinelli-colon did not participate in activities often, she always welcomed staff in her room. Whether it was for a conversation or to play board games, she always invited the staff with an open arm. During Thanksgiving, the enclave had a lunch for residents and families. This was the first time Ms. Mutinelli-colon attended, and she loved it. “I wish I came down more often.” After that day, she started to participate in our daily activities.
Despite multiple barriers, Ms. Mutinelli-colon became independent with everything. She could perform all ADLs (activities of daily living) at the time of discharge. After 203 days here at The Enclave, Ms. Mutinelli-colon returned home. We all were very excited for her.
We all wished her continued better health and escorted her to her car on January 3rd, 2024.
