How did the patient hear about The Enclave at Rye? The patient was admitted after a referral from a social worker at Burke Rehab Hospital, who recommended The Enclave due to our Comprehensive Amputee Rehabilitation Program, spearheaded by the founders of The Amputee Walking School, Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler.
Reason for Stay: Rehabilitation following complete traumatic amputation of the right lower leg
Details of Experience:
Mr. F was admitted to The Enclave at Rye Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on October 25th, 2025. He was referred to The Enclave by a social worker from Burke Rehab Hospital. Once he heard about Todd and Dennis’ story, Mr. F was more than excited and was very motivated to start his therapy journey in our community. Upon arrival, Mr. F was welcomed by the concierge and introduced to the interdisciplinary care team, including the unit nurse, the nursing supervisor, and the doctor.
The interdisciplinary team, including nursing, rehabilitation, social services, and the recreation department, immediately completed their evaluation. He was also introduced to Todd and Dennis by the concierge and his therapy team, Lauren and Natalie. Once all evaluations were completed, he was ready to begin his new journey towards better health.
During the first weeks of his admission, Mr. F was completely dependent; he required maximal assistance with all his activities of daily living (ADLs) and all transfers, such as wheelchair to bed, etc. According to his occupational therapist, he was very deconditioned. He quickly developed upper- and lower-body strength and improved his transfers and mobility. He made good progress with ADLs, driven by gains in muscle strength, endurance, activity tolerance, and balance. Once he was strong enough for his prosthesis, he was fitted with a temporary one for about two weeks, then with his permanent one. He achieved his highest practical level in therapy and was ready for discharge.
He was discharged to his community independently. The team was in awe of his progress and his success. We all gathered in our lobby to wish him all the best on his new journey. Mr. F keeps in contact with his rehab team at The Enclave, letting them know about his progress, and it’s always good to hear about his progress.
